THE VELVET GALLERY
# Featured
SMOOTH FACTS
1. King Richard II of England directed in his will that his body should be clothed in velveto in 1399;
2. Because of its unusual softness and appearance as well as its high cost of production, velvet has often been associated with nobility;
3. Cairo was once the world’s largest producer of velvet;
4. Much of it was exported to Venice (from whence it spread to most of Europe, in the 13th century)
5.(travel tip) Talking about Venice, Hotel Ca´Sagredo , also known as The pink jewel of Venice, is one of the most spectacular (museum-like) hotels you can spend you weekend in. Read about it here on coloredideas.com
(Great, I wanna’ book it now.)
6. The bankers and comerciants from Italian cities became wealthy because they traded velvet through Europe, from Renaissance until the 18th century.
7. There’s a video on youtube that explains the different kind of velvet available on the market. Yes, it’s here.
8. Alexander Wang, Dries Van Noten, Sonia Rykiel, Tom Ford put velvet on their runways.
9. In fall 2008 Kate Moss launched her second perfume in collaboration with Coty. She named it Velvet Hour;
10. When searching “red velvet” on Pinterest you might find more cakes than dresses. Like so.
So all this started with the fact that belvet is a big trend this season, and I have to say I love it – the velvet, I love the way it looks, the way it flows on the body, the way it feels. A dress, a bag, a pair or shoes, new pillow cases, you name it, you should surround yourself with velvet this winter if not for its history, for the comfort it brings. Of course, I’m thinking about curtains and clothes in this very moment, but let’s see the inspirational gallery:
